Many people each year visit Chincoteague and Assateague Islands to see the ponies. We're no different. For over 20 years, we've been visiting and taking pictures of the ponies. The pictures here fall into 3 categories. Click on one of the above links or click on one of the pictures below to go directly to those pony pictures.
Some
these pictures are pretty old. They show the times when the herd actually
ran free on the island. Several years ago, they started keeping them
fenced away from the tourists and their cars. This was to protect the
people and the ponies. You can see from these pictures that there were
many more ponies around the people.
The
Southern Herd is the one people usually see. I'm not sure how many ponies
there are but it seems smaller than the Northern Herd. If you pay
attention, you can almost always see them from the road. Unlike the past,
they usually aren't in the road.
The
Northern Herd can be seen but they are an 8 mile round trip from the wildlife
loop parking and you have to walk it. Not many people pursue it.
